Jobs for the Weekend

If the weekend is dry:

Check the second stage compost bin to see if the comost needs turning or can go into the third stage bin, which is almost empty.
Rake up the camellia blossom that has fallen.
Plant out any remaining pea seedlings.
Plant out onions. Its a bit late, but better late than never.

If the weekend is wet:

Sprinkle Growmore on the garlic, feed the gardenia while there is rain to water it in.

Building a coldframe

The lobelia sown last weekend are beginning to show. Coriander is sprouting nicely now.

Finished building a coldframe, 120cm x 90cm x 70cm. I made the mistake of building the front and back first, then attached the sides. It would be better to do the sides first as they are more complex. A flat at the top allows the lid to be easily hinged.

Moved the marigold seedlings and some other into the frame to make space in the garage.

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Compost, cleaning and cutting back

Turned compost, took some semi-matured out to mulch the easternmost vege patch, which contains two blueberry bushes.

Pruning ornamental grasses

The grasses Carex buchananii, Carex Solandri and Festuca banks peninsula blue along the drive are looking straggly and have lost their symmetry. There are a lot of dead stalks. There are weeds growing among the clumps and now its winter, its time to do some tidying up.
The clumps of Carex buchananii are given a rough cut with shears first, then tidied using secateurs.

Friday, July 16, 2010

Pruning, mulching, repotting, weeding.

Its been a pleasant day with plenty of sun and a max of 15 degrees, and no wind.
